Week 2: Spiritual Health

Bible Study and Prayer

"The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone."
2 Timothy 3:16-17 LB

HOW DO I GET MORE FROM MY BIBLE STUDY?

Accept its authority.

We believe that the Bible, and only the Bible, is the authoritative Word of God. It alone is the final authority in determining all doctrinal truths. In its original writing, it is inspired, infallible and inerrant.

Receive God's Word with an open heart.

"and we also thank God continuously because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God... "
1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV

Respond to God's Word with obedience.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
James 1:22 NIV

Absorb its truths

  • Hear God's Word.
  • "So then faith comes by hearing...the word of God."
    Romans 10:17 NKJV
  • Read God's Word.
  • "Happy is the one who reads this book...and obeys what is written in this book."
    Revelation 1:3 GNT
  • Study God's Word.
  • "They studied the Scriptures every day to make sure that what they heard was really true."
    Acts 17:11 ERV
  • Memorize God's Word.
  • "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."
    Psalm 119:11 NKJV)
  • Meditate on God's Word.
  • "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night… Then you will be prosperous and successful."
    Joshua 1:8 NIV

    Apply its principles.

"Now that you know these things you will be blessed if you do them."
    John 13:17 NIV
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
    James 1:22 NIV

    PRAYER - TALKING WITH GOD

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything."
    Philippians 4:6 NLT.
Jesus exemplified a personal relationship with God through prayer that gave Him great strength. Every person who has ever been effective in service for God has developed this habit. The only way to be a healthy Christian is to spend time with God daily through prayer.

In my daily prayer time, I am

  • Giving devotion to God
  • "Hezekiah was successful, because everything he did...he did in a spirit of complete loyalty and devotion to his God."
    2 Chronicles 31:21 GNB
  • Getting direction from God
  • "Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me..."
    Psalm 25:4-5 NLT
  • Growing in my relationship with God.
  • "You must depend on Christ only, drawing life and strength from Him. Just as you were taught the truth, continue to grow stronger in understanding of it and never stop giving thanks to God."
    Colossians 2:7 ERV

Use the model Jesus gave us.

"One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of his disciples said to Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray.'"
    Luke 11:1 NIV
Jesus said: "In this manner, therefore, pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever."
    Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV
  • Connect with God relationally.
  • "Our Father in heaven."
  • Run to His Name.
  • "Hallowed be Your Name."
  • Pray His agenda first.
  • "Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven."
  • Depend on Him for everything.
  • "Give us today our daily bread."
  • Keep your heart right with God and people.
  • "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."
  • Take your stand against the enemy.
  • "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
  • Have faith in God's ability.
  • "For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever."
